Construction News Specialist Contractor of the Year (Turnover under £25m)

We are the proud winner of this coveted award that spanned beyond the electrical sub-genre to all specialist in the UK market. We were humbled to be chosen from a shortlist of highly impressive businesses.

Judges summarised electrical contractor DNS Engineering’s X-factor in three words: “purpose before profit”.

Judges commented that DNS Engineering is a “forward-thinking company, whose whole business ethos is thinking outside the box. The business puts the staff at its heart and captures their ideas, with a strong focus on innovation too. There was a clear openness to embrace new ideas and improve performance by looking at other industry initiatives.”

Electrical Industry Awards Finalist 2019

DNS was shortlisted in the Contractor of the Year category at the 2019 Electrical Times (EI) awards. Our approach to business was seen as “refreshing” with the judges being particularly impressed that our company “had never used a day of agency labour with a clear focus on the professional development of its people”.

This is an ethos that is “focused on the long-term success of the company and the wellbeing of its staff and a credit to our industry”.

Construction News Rising Star 2019 Finalist (Marius Enache)

One of our directors was nominated for the prestigious Rising Star award in 2019. The judges were particularly taken by Marius’ drive to move the construction industry into the next industrial revolution. He is particularly focused on construction data, sustainability and changing the penalising nature of the contracts in our industry.

At a CN roundtable with CITB Marius outlined his vision: “We overdesign buildings so much in terms of copy-and-pasting from one to the next; stuff like that needs to be improved and be made more efficient.

‘The development of technology within the industry is occasionally used as a selling point to attract fresh talent. But such efforts can fall flat amid general negative perceptions of the industry. DNS Engineering’s Mr Enache raised this point, adding that contractors needed to find ways of enlivening their offering.

“Whatever age [at which people are coming to the industry], you just need to make it a bit more interesting, a bit more fun,” he urged. “I think that’s forgotten. It seems to be very much about coming out of college, going into work, [being told] you’re doing these hours and you’re just working.”

He said his firm had sought to inspire its apprentices by showing them how advanced construction technology could be.

DNS Engineering takes apprentices to car-assembly factories, which Mr Enache hopes will encourage them to adopt an innovative mindset. “These factory visits prompt apprentices to look at how the industry can do things a little bit differently and then come to me or my father with ideas,” he said.’
